Never Be Locked Out Again

Posted on: 20 November 2017

Whether you've lost your keys or just locked them inside, being locked out of your home can be a frustrating, embarrassing experience. However, making a few simple adjustments can help ensure that you never find yourself locked out.

Change your key routine

Establishing a clear routine will make your keys harder to forget. Choose an easily visible place to store them, such as a hook on the wall or a special dish on a table. Be careful not to place your keys too close to the front door where they might be visible or even reachable. When you go out, secure your keys to your bag or belt with a clip to avoid dropping them.

Create a spare

If you do lose your keys or leave them inside, a spare key can get you back in easily. As soon as you take possession of a new set of keys, have your locksmith make you a duplicate set. Making a spare set of keys is quick and affordable and can save you the time and expense of calling out a locksmith to let you into your house in the event of being locked out. However, just getting a new set of keys isn't enough; you have to have a good place to keep them.

Store your spare keys safely

Many people make the mistake of hiding their spare keys atop a door frame or under a flower pot. These hiding places are not secure; like false rocks and other common methods of hiding a key, they're too well-known to provide any real security. Instead, leave your spare key with a friend, family member or trusted neighbour. When you get locked out, just call your contact. It may take a little longer to get the key, but it will be much safer than leaving it in public. Alternatively, store your key in a locked box with a combination keypad.

Change your locks

This method can't stop you from getting locked out when you lose your keys, but it will make a difference if you're concerned about leaving your keys inside. Changing your locks to deadbolts will mean that you have to lock them from outside; if you've gone out without your key, you won't be able to lock the door at all. Of course, this does mean that you'll need to remember to lock the door when you go out, but it will definitely save you from being locked out.
