Homeowners spend millions of dollars making their property aesthetically appealing. From installing an outstanding driveway and keeping a lawn well-manicured to building a stunning deck, the list is endless. However, as much as you want your house to stand out from the rest in a unique way, you should consider making it unattractive to burglars. The reason is that burglars scout properties first before making a move and only target properties with lacklustre security systems. Most importantly, a security system should make your house unattractive to intruders. Here is how.
Show Signs of Life
One of the first things that make burglars think twice about breaking into your home is showing signs of life. Most people believe that you can only do it when at home. However, you can install a smart security system that automatically turns on the lights in different rooms at intervals. It creates the perception that someone is at home even if you are away on vacation with your family. A security system can also turn on sprinklers, a television, or a stereo system. When potential intruders see such activities in and around your house, they will stay far away.
Lock All Entryways
Windows and doors are part of your home's security system. Therefore, they must be locked at all times to keep your household safe. However, houses have different entryways, which can provide an avenue for burglars. For example, if you have an attic room, you must never leave it open. Most homeowners believe that since an attic window sits high, burglars cannot reach it. However, nothing could be further from the truth because burglars will always find a way when they spot a weakness in your security system. In this case, they can pose as roofers or cable technicians and use a ladder to enter your house through the attic room. Therefore, ensure that every possible entryway is locked, including a pet door.
Never Leave Keys Hidden Around Your Property
Losing your keys can be devastating, which is why some homeowners keep a copy somewhere around their property. Others leave a key under their front door rug for other family members without a copy. However, it is a risky move regardless of your discretion. Burglars lurking around the corner might see where you hide your keys. If you must leave a key for one of your friends or family member, leave it with a neighbour since you know who to ask if an incident occurs.
