Dealing With Being Locked Out

Posted on: 30 November 2017

Being locked out of your home can be a frustrating experience, but it doesn't have to be a disaster. With the help of a mobile locksmith, you can be back in your home quickly. Once you've done that, you need to decide what your next step is going to be. The right move depends on why you found yourself locked out.

Forgetting your keys

If you just left your keys inside your house, you probably don't need to make any changes to your home's locks. Instead, you might want to consider taking some precautions against this happening again. Ask your locksmith to make you a duplicate key, and leave it with a trusted friend, relative, or neighbour. Don't leave it under your doormat or in another outdoor location; these types of hiding places are well known to would-be intruders. Keep the number of a mobile locksmith in your phone in case of emergencies. If you frequently find yourself leaving your keys inside, consider changing your locks to deadbolts. These won't close unless you lock them from the outside, making it impossible to lock yourself out.

Losing your keys

If you've lost your keys or they've been stolen, you should think about changing your locks. With the keys to your home missing, the building's security is compromised, especially if you lost your keys together with a wallet or purse that might contain your address. Consult with your locksmith about replacing or rekeying your locks. Rekeying your existing locks is a simple, quick, and affordable way to give yourself some peace of mind, but your locksmith may also be able to recommend some ways to upgrade your locks or add new security features.

Damaged locks

If your front door lock jams, you may find yourself stuck on the outside. Your mobile locksmith should be able to open and repair or replace the lock. If your home has more than one door, you can get in easily enough as long as you have the key. Unfortunately, many people don't routinely carry the keys to their side or back doors, assuming that it's unnecessary as long as they have the front door key. One way to get around this problem is to install a master lock system, in which one key opens every door in the building. This will give you the ability to get in through any door without having to carry a large ring of keys everywhere you go.
